“Of the hundreds of young musicians who have passed through the COTA mentoring program, none exemplify the merits of this endeavor more than Davey Lantz. His rapid rise in the pro-ranks is proof of his superb artistry. And his new trio CD Ascent demonstrates this with aplomb.
Two originals, “Helix” and “Crescent Moon” showcase his writing skills and the trio plays them to perfection.
Matt Dennis and Earl Brent’s song, “I Fall In Love Too Easily” from “Anchors Aweigh” for Sinatra. Both show his concern for the American Songbook, but with a Lantz-ian take on the classics. He has a fertile imagination and brings freshness to these standards. Nice bass solo on “I Fall.”
DeBop would put a smile on Diz and Bird’s faces, I am sure. Put a smile on mine! Bebop of the future! I love it!
Rounding up these sublime performances is another Davey Lantz original, “Devotion” that shows the cohesiveness of the trio. Good band – great music!”
“When I first heard Davey play, he was the youngest guy I had ever heard with a natural swinging time feel. He has progressed to become a very mature player as evidenced on this debut recording. Most of all the trio’s interaction is subtle, yet strong and confident at the same time, giving a feeling of true cohesion which includes some memorable originals and rearms of standards…truly stellar performances by all three young artists.”
“Lantz is one of the most natural and sensitive musicians I’ve come across; and Ascent is a compelling first chapter to his story.”
“Davey Lantz is an original and talented pianist who’s musical growth will be worthwhile watching.”
“Davey Lantz is a fine young pianist with a firm grasp of the mechanics of his craft, and a very good idea of where he wants to go. I really like Davey’s playing. It’s sort of like crisp iced tea on a hot dat. His approach is different from my own – his playing is light and clear, and his pulse has a bounce that conveys to me a certain kind of joy. After living with my own sounds so much of my life, it’s refreshing to hear a pianist with a different viewpoint – hence the iced tea thing. If listening to this music makes you feel anywhere near the way I did, then it’ll have been a good day.”
